what does 'console' mean regarding linux games

What does it mean when it says 'console' for a game. I'm looking at the games on tucows and the id games are often console as opposed to x11.

I had already tried that but all I get is a window that pops for only a instant, not long enough to read, and I'm returned to the command line and nothing's changed.

Or XMMS, that comes in the box if you have the multimedia package selected.
Just say Ctrl-L and specify the dir where your cdrom should be mounted.
