What are some cool/handy tools you've run across while using Linux?


Hello everyone, i was curious if people could share some links or names of cool/handy tools for linux you've come across, weither it be GUI's to install tar balls or software that will monitor your system. Almost like a top 10 Software tools you can't go without! thanks guys! I won't have Linux till wednesday but i'm excited!

this would actually save u some time and everyone else the effort of actually answering...since there is the "2004 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Awards".

i doubt there have been any massive changes in opinions since then, except maybe gnome/kde.

as far as "tools" are concerned, to add to Tinkster's list...
bzip2

mc - midnight commander - text (ncurses) based file browser aka file explorer.
mpg321 - command-line mp3 player
the various mixers - aumix, alsamixer, kmix/kmixer
cdparanioa - "ripper"

the awards forum doesn't seem to be listed on the main page...at least not with the default setting for old threads (doesn't show threads older than a certain age). i searched for the link knowing it was around. so it wouldn't be known that it existed.
