I am slowly learning how to build a debian system that I can use on a daily bases and hopefully replace my MS system, the question I have is about win4lin.
I read in the above sticky, on recompiling the kernel, that win4lin was being compiled and used. After going to the win4lin site it sounds like it will solve my problem being able to use specific software, i.e.
First question, will the software do what they claim?
Second question, can you run any windows based software (specifically the ones I mentioned above)?
Third question is there other ways of getting the above software to run on debian linux?
I have Win4Lin with SuSE8.2 since over a year because my genealogyprogram does not (yet) run in Linux. What you need is a full MS Windows98 (best Win98SE), maybe ME works also, check with Netraverse. Everything that works with Win98 will do it here.
There are a few limitations: I had a problem to install my HP5550 printer, so I choose another model, for what I do I see no limitations; I didn't push to find a way to get the 5550 really as printer; under linux this printer powers-up when a print is send, under Win4Lin you have to manually switch it on first - not a big issue. Floppies were also a bit tricky, but I use them always under Linux. Although my printer is USB, it seems not possible to get a USB scanner working. Reading CD's is no problem; writing don't know because I always use K3B in linux.
So the few little problems you may encounter are hardware-related. I have the feeling that Win98 is a bit stabler this way, but some typical Win98 problems are there because in fact it IS windows. However you have the linux security because it uses linux to communicate. And you can switch with one mouseclick between MS and linux, and you have access from linux to all your MS files.
