Vqadmin.cgi, 403 Forbidden Erros, and httpd.conf woe

from http://www.qmailrocks.org/vqadmin.htm :

Quote:
If all has gone well, you should now be able to browse (in your web browser) to:
http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/vqadmin/vqadmin.cgi

Well, thanks guys, but I browse to the following...

Quote:
Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /cgi-bin/vqadmin/vqadmin.cgi on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache Server at myhost.dyndns.org Port 80

[root@myputer cgi-bin]# ls -l
total 356
drwxr-xr-x 3 vpopmail vchkpw 4096 Apr 19 21:17 vqadmin

I suspect httpd.conf, but I've spent two days straight on this and I feel dumber about Apache than when I started. I experienced the same trouble with qmailadmin on a previous install attempt. Firefox was attempting to open qmailadmin as a BIN file. WTF. Seems like I am destined to be qmail-less.

Thanks in advance for any tips/suggestions. :]

OK... I got past that, now vqadmin just keeps asking for user/password over and over again. Never authenticates. Then gives 401 when I press cancel.

Output of httpd error_log:

Code:
[Tue Apr 20 02:13:14 2004] [error] [client 67.167.**.***] (13)Permission denied: Could not open password file: /usr/local/apache2/2.0.49/conf/vqadmin.passwd
[Tue Apr 20 02:13:14 2004] [error] [client 67.167.**.***] user admin not found: /cgi-bin/qmailadmin

.htaccess /usr/local/apache2/2.0.49/htdocs/cgi-bin/vqadmin/
vqadmin.passwd /usr/local/apache2/2.0.49/conf/

What am I doing wrong? Are Apache's virtual hosts part of this scheme? I have put the suggested info in httpd.conf, and I can paste that if necesary.

ANY HELP APPRECIATED! THANKS :]

ok...

I was focusing in permissions of .htaccess, not realizing that permissions are much more complicated than that. The parent directory where .htpasswd resides must be owned by apache user. In my case I moved .htpasswd from /usr/local/apache2/2.0.49/conf to ~/secrets/

Then,

Code:
chown nobody.nobody /usr/local/apache2/2.0.49/secrets/
# apachectl stop
# apachectl start

Voila!

But now, vqadmin doesn't do anything when I click on links.

I know better by now than to expect a reply, but nonetheless... all help appreciated!

Thanks for your assistance , I have managed to find a solution to my vqadmin web login problems from your posting. I was having the problem

" user admin not found and failed to open /usr/local/apache/conf/.htpasswd"

I then created another folder which I gave www access the vqadmin login went in like a clock.

that was my problem.

I really apprecite this
