Question VMWare 4.0.0.4460 won't install, mismatched kernel?

Hi! I'm new to Linux and have gotten through a couple of issues on my own, but I've now come across a really interesting problem.

I downloaded the demo of vmware and am trying to install it on my SuSE 8.2 Pro workstation.

Here is what the output says, after installing the RPM (I also extracted and installed the tar version, with same results):

linux:/home/dpcole7 # vmware-config.pl
Making sure VMware Workstation's services are stopped.

Stopping VMware services:
Virtual machine monitor done

Trying to find a suitable vmmon module for your running kernel.

None of VMware Workstation's pre-built vmmon modules is suitable for your
running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes]

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include] /usr/include

The directory of kernel headers (version 2.4.20) does not match your running
kernel (version 2.4.20-4GB-athlon). Even if the module were to compile
successfully, it would not load into the running kernel.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]

Sadly, vmware won't help those with the evaluation version.

My hardware:
Abit NF7 motherboard
1GB RAM (2x512MB Crucial modules)
AMD Athlon XP 2100+
GeForce 4600 video (4363 version drivers installed)
SB Audigy audio

SuSE Linux 8.2 Pro

I'd love to get this going to see how emulation works out.

Thank you much in advance!

kernel headers are for 2.4.20
kernel is 2.4.20-4GB-athlon
must be a custom kernel, u need the sources including headers for this specific kernel.
