Unhappy Slackware 9 Kernel Panic while trying to install in VMWare 4

Ok I'm trying to install slackware 9 in vmware. my host OS is Windows Xp and this is a HP Pavilion N5425 Laptop. I've installed Slack on this on it's own dedicated partition and it installed fine. Now when I try to install it via VMWare because the modem is a winmodem i get this error

Slackware 4 Installs fine but I can't figure out how to install the vmware tools because of the systemV init scripts and stuff like that. I did it once and i did get X up and running but i forget how i managed to do that since it was 2 months ago. Also Redhat 6 also performs a kernel panic as well but i'm not looking for help with redhat. This Laptop is a 900mhz Amd Athlon 4. 256 mb ram.

just a question, why would you want to run slack in vmware? also, didn't microsoft recently purchase vmware and remove support for linux? (i may be thinking of a different aquisition)

MS bought out Connectix Virtual PC . Not vmware I have a win modem so i won't be able to dial up that's why I want to run it in vmware. I'm only here to find out why that kernel panic keeps happening. It's no good to me if i can't go online. Heh.

That's a hell of an error! I'll be damned if I know why it's doing that ;-)

Enjoy!

running linux in vmware on a laptop... sounds to me like it's too complicated to be practical. i would just get a new modem.. oh wait, it's a laptop. well.. that's a pickle. also, you said that slack 4 installs fine directly but slack 9 won't install in vmware? that's really not a good comparison, sounds completely different to me actually. i don't know what to tell you, sorry.
