Visual Basic Help in MonoDevelop

First off, I am using Monodevelop 2 RC1.
So in a few weeks I am starting a programming class with Visual Basic, however, the class is going to be using Visual Studio, and I run Linux. So my main question is, of the (4?) main versions of Visual Basic, what ones can I program and compile on Linux? I know that mono can compile (some?) visual basic, however I am at a loss on how to code even a basic hello world program. Basically what I need to know is, what is the easiest way to program and compile visual basic on linux? I do have access to a windows installation that I can run in Virtual Box, however I would like to avoid that if at all possible. Also, if you have visual basic knowledge, how would I make a basic hello world program under linux? (Assuming it's possible.) Thanks in advance, any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Point your browser at www.google.com/linux, and enter these search words: "visual basic" linux. You will find plenty to read.

Will your school's computer lab assign disk space to you to use? Probably yes.
Will you be able to log in to the school's network from your Linux box? unknown.
Will you be able to run Visual Studio remotely in order to do your programming from home? unknown.
Will you be able to save your work in your personal work space on the server? Probably yes.

If you can get definite answers to the two unknown above, you will probably find that you can do your work from home using your Linux box, while logged in to the school's network.

For "hello world" in VB, see www.google.com/microsoft, and you will find this:
Code:
' A "Hello, World!" program in Visual Basic.
Module Hello
  Sub Main()
MsgBox("Hello, World!") ' Display message on computer screen.
  End Sub
End Module

Thanks for the reply, and sorry for my late response, however I still have other persisting questions. How do I actually start a visual basic project in Monodevelop? I can't seem to figure out how to do it. Any more help would be greatly appreciated.

You might as well accept the fact that you will be learning to use Windows and Visual Basic (or Visual Studio...whatever).

The VS IDE is really quite complicated and highly evolved (and, IMNSHO, a royal PITA). Nothing available in Linux comes close to the same degree of integration.

If you do not know how to program at all, you will find your job compounded - nay, magnified by orders of magnitude - if you try to learn on a platform and in an environment that is different from that of your class.

I think you would be very foolish to try to do your work in mono, given that this is a beginning programming class where the environment is already fixed. You are setting yourself up for failure.

Well I wasn't really planning on it working fully, I just wanted to know if it were POSSIBLE. I knew that I wouldn't be able to work on the same projects from the class in mono, I merely thought thought that I might be able to do other VB stuff in mono outside of the class. I'm going to just install windows in virtualbox and go from there.
