Virtualbox Drives

Quick and simple:

Does anyone know of a way to mount a virtual drive as a device in linux?

Thanks,

JF

If you are running Windows inside VirtualBox, shared directories which you have configured will be available from the share named \\vboxsvr\[sharename]. I use this with XP and it works OK, although I have found a few crashes of VirtualBox when accessing files in such a shared folder with MSYS tools (e.g. svn update of a directory shared like this).

I have not been able to see these shares when I run Linux inside VirtualBox. Google helped me find an example using a mount command and a special filesystem type. I think this must be something provided in the guest additions thing. I've not used it myself.

Yeah, I have openSUSE loaded in a VirtualBox machine. I'm not sure if I had to install the guest additions before I could mount the shares from my linux Host because I installed them before I mounted my shares.

I was just looking for a way to have access to the "drive" when I don't have the virtual machine running.

BTW... for anyone who happens upon this thread

the command to mount a share is:
Code:
(as root) mount -t vboxfs [Share Name] [Mount Point]
So if you have a share "VirtShare" on your host and have setup this share in virtualbox (either through the GUI or through VBoxManage), and you have created your mount point, the command would be:

Code:
sudo mount -t vboxfs VirtShare /mnt/virtshare
Later,

JF
