virtual consoles

Hi, for some reason when inside X i can't switch virtual consoles ( i tried ctrl-alt-f2, alt-f2, etc..) but if i do a console login and don't start X it works.
I'm running a debian which I initialy installed from a XFLD(modified knoppix) live cd.
Any ideas?

It is possbile that the virtual terminals aren't being started in the graphical login runlevel, check /etc/inittab and make sure the gettys are started with graphical login.
