vi editor in text mode, no x server installed, backspace don't work

hi guys,
I just installed a new debian and when I use vi, the backspace behaves weird. I don't know how to fix this. For instance, I write something and then press delete cause I made a mistake, it behaves like a left arrow instead of deleting the characters, it moves left but does not delete anything. Can someone please tell me how to control this stuff? I tried to find .virc files or something, but they do not exist. I have another debian server but vi does not show this problem. Thanks in advance.

Use 'x' from command mode to delete characters in vi. Or "dw" to delete a whole word, "d$" to delete to the end of line, "dd" to delete the whole line. . .

Assuming you're using vim, you probably have vi compatibility mode switched on. Turn it off to be less vi-strict.

No, I don't use vim, but I will actually install it rather than trying to fix this one. Thanks thou.
