Using Search for system files ; How is it done in Linux

I want to reload an application but rpmdrake won't remove the old one. When I go to reinstall it, it just reconnects the link with the same configurations that I don't want.I can't find the file in the package stats either.

The search feature on my distro seems useless in comparison to a proprietor systems that I'm used to. Is there another search application that can be installed. It's real nice to be able to do a search and then just remove the files if it comes down to being the best solution.

Thanks in advance

I think you'll need provide more information to get help.

What are you actually using to do the search? find? locate? Are you trying to search for a filename, or for a file containing something?

I was trying out K3b and I turned off the tool bar option and there is no GUI way to get it back. If you remove the wrong button from the interface you can't do anything else about it. So when I went to use RPM to remove it behaves like it has removed it but when I go to reinstall it, it takes one second and is configured in the same worthless way as when I attempted to un-install it. I cant get rid of the actual file to reinstall it because rpm is just removing a hard link to remove it problably and It checks to see if that file is in a particular place and if it is it's done with the operation.

I'm not using the shell just the search GUI at the moment.

Ok, that sounds like a user level configuration. Uninstalling k3b wont do anything since the config file will be somewhere in your home directory.

Have a look in ~/.kde/share/apps/k3b Deleting that whole directory should get you back to the default settings.

Just like you said.

Ever notice how you have to spout off before you can think of it your self? Well that's how my mind works anyway. It's like right after you blame everyone for not being able to find something there it is in front of your face. I actually got the find command to work and it led me right where you said it would. My bash terminal is a buggy inconstant piece of junk. You have to be used to it's inconsistencies while you are learning how to use it. You can use the correct command along with the syntax and it won't work sometimes. I will have to get more use to using bash with Linux it looks like. The bash find command worked like a charm. The GUI search that comes with Gnome is a poor excuse for a tool.

[root@localhost pete]# find / -name k3b
/home/pete/.kde/share/apps/k3b
[root@localhost pete]#

I removed that piece of crud (k3b) and tossed it in the trash. I'll have to be more careful not to go crazy with the mouse and use the GUI to delete? the GUI? Why would anyone program something like that? Gee whiz!
Thanks a lot for your expertise.
