Urgent: I want to setup Veritas Cluster Server 6.0.2 on Centos 6.4
I downloaded the trial 6.0.2 64-bit from Symantec, but it refused to install on Centos 6.4, since I don't have paid version of RHEL, are there other ways to bypass this limitation?
1). I do have RHEL6.3, since I don't have subscription, I can't use RHN, so if I install it on unpaid RHEL 6.3, can I use Veritas Cluster w/o regular update from RHN? This is not a productive environment, I am just learning Veritas Cluster software.
2). In the worst scenario, if I pay $349, does their license allow me to put on two workstations and gives me update on a regular basis for both of them? or I should pay then $698? I understand I am only getting self-support, which is OK most of the time!

So then load CentOS 6.3, and you won't have to worry about it. If you're using RHEL, you need to pay for it..and chances are, you will have to load dependencies or other software which will be MUCH more difficult without online repositories. CentOS is 99.x% IDENTICAL to RHEL, but free.

If you want to know what the Veritas license covers, call Veritas sales and ask. That's the best and quickest way to get an accurate answer.
And this is *NOT* 'urgent' for anyone here...we volunteer our time, so asking for/expecting 'urgent' help is fairly rude.

Sorry about using "Urgent", actually Centos 6.3 is also not supported, it is clear to me Veritas Cluster simply won't work for Centos 6, thanks for your reply. Also I can't find the "Add to Reputation" button

It is not on the supported LIST, but it will work just fine. And since you said it's just for learning purposes, it doesn't matter, does it?

The scales icon to the left of a post.
It does not even allow me to install once it finds out it is Centos, not RHEL. If I shell out $349, do you think I can get RHN to work for 2 (just two) workstations? I am paying this from my own pocket! Also I tried to click the scale icon, no response!
How does it find out?? Chances are it's by reading the contents of /etc/redhat-release. Edit that simple text file and make it read:
Code:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.3 (Santiago)
>>>>>And you uninstalled RHEL and installed CentOS 6.3 just to try it, in under 20 minutes?
I have Centos 6.3 on other computers, so no success, also the installation guide clearly states it only support RHEL 5/6, SLES 10/11.
>>>>>>Again, no idea. If you have concerns, call Veritas support, since you're shelling out money, they will answer your questions.
I checked RHN, it says during registration, it will use both the software and hardware profile to generate system profile, then it RHN will deliver the right packages to the target system based on "System Profile", so basically each purchase can only work for one system, which is what I had expected!

...which is available for FREE TRIAL, as best as I can figure out from their website (the "Trialware" button, top right of that link). Again...CentOS 6.3 will work just fine. If it's for non-production use, then you don't have to spend ANYTHING to get it working, either for VCS or the operating system. If you want to use Red Hat Enterprise, then you need to pay for it so you can have access to the things you need. Simple as that.
Again: edit the /etc/redhat-release file, put the text in, and do your VCS installation on CentOS. Or, pay for RHEL and VCS...your choice. If you want to know about licensing terms for VCS, you need to contact the people who MAKE IT, which is Symantec.

I hate to argue with people, but RHN is locked to specific machine because that is how they generate revenue, if not, one large enterprise can just buy 1 copy (say $5000) and install on 5000 servers and all of them get upgrades.
I uploaded the picture where Centos is rejected! I am installing RHEL6.4 w/o RHN and I will see what will happen when I install VCS!

Right...so again, what's the problem??? You want to use Red Hat, then you BUY RED HAT. If you don't buy it, then you'll not have the features of those who DO. Simple. I never said it was any different...if you want to use RHEL, you pay for it.

...and we're back to "If you changed the text in the file, you could install VCS". AGAIN
If you want RHEL with VCS, pay for both.
If you want to TEST VCS on CentOS, modify the file as told to you twice before now.
If you want to know about VCS licensing terms, contact the people who sell it and ask them.
Not sure how you're using Satellite in this equation, but if you have that, you've got the money to spend. Satellite is NOT cheap, and getting it set up isn't easy, either.

thanks a million, I did change that little under /etc/, and now it works, you saved me a lot of $$$$$$. I really appreciate you!
I got this error message (smtp is the name of the workstation):
CPI ERROR V-9-30-1316 The following required OS rpms (or higher version) were not found on
smtp: libstdc++-4.4.5-6.el6.i686
installer log files and summary file are saved at: /opt/VRTS/install/logs/installer-201308171643qHU
Since my arch is x64, why this thing ask me for libstdc++-4.4.5-6.el6.i686? I already have libstdc++-4.4.7-3.el6.x86_64 installed, so I actually download and try to install it, I got this:
Can't install /home/jap85/Desktop/libstdc++-4.4.5-6.el6.i686.rpm as no transaction
I am buffled why mine 64-bit was not accepted?
Update: I downloaded libstdc++-4.4.7-3.el6.i686 and forced the system to install it
# rpm -ivh --ignorearch libstdc++-4.4.7-3.el6.i686.rpm
Yes, the x64 version of VRTS does require some x86 packages to be installed on RHEL x64. I am surprised why only libstdc++ .. or maybe that's the only one you have listed.
Just install the required packages, as the installer prompts you from the RHEL install media. The x64 media has the x86 rpm's as well.
i.e: libstdc++-4.4.6-4.el6.x86_64.rpm, as well as libstdc++-4.4.6-4.el6.i686.rpm
Just mount the RHEL media, and in a terminal session (with root privileges) cd to "/Packages" directory of the media and issue:
rpm -ivh libstdc++-4.4.6-4.el6.i686.rpm
