I did a search in YaST, and my query returned no results? Not even saying the packages is availble, but not installed. It looks like the package was not availble to even install? My version of SuSE 9.1 is from suse.com...

Any ideas?

In suse9.0, the package is findutils-locate
"On installing findutils-locate an additional daily cron job will be added to the cron system. This job will update the files database every night or shortly after switching on the computer." <--this sounds like updatedb to me

Sure as heck does...

So I guess that is telling me if that package findutils is installed, I no longer have to update the database files?

No....findutils-locate is not the same as findutils.
findutils-locate, if installed, will automatically update the database daily, so yeah, you won't have to do it manually. On my system it does this at 4am, or if i shut of the machine before that time, it runs after it reboots, and usually takes about 10-15 minutes (things slow down a little while this is happening).

installing

now i know someone posted saying there was a utility that functioned like updatedb.

Can I still install updatedb if i wanted? I checked the SuSE ftp site, and I cannot find updatedb?

Also, will this cause any conflict with other packages such as the one mentioned in the previous post?

I know I may not need it, I'm just curious...

You can't find updatedb because you should be looking for findutils-locate. updatedb is apparently part of this package.
