Undelete/unformat programs!?

had the bad luck to enter: sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/hdb1 on my harddrive. I just copied and past, thought it was the mount command. I realised it was not, untill it had come to about 700 of 895 in the counter(it went fast). The disk was almost full, 105 gig.

What to do with the disk? When i try to mount it i get:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdb1,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

"Fparted" label it as "Unknown Filesystem". Help?
"Fparted" label it as "Unknown Filesystem".
"Unable to detect filesystem! Possible reasons are:
-The filesystem is damaged.
-The filesystem is unknown to libparted
-There is no filesystem available (unformatted)

After this i tried: sudo fsck.ext3 /dev/hdb1 but it didn't help.

I have tried "Foremost". But i don't understand it. Some have said that i should do an image first of the hd, with for example dd_rescue, but i dont have enough space.

I have tried 3 windows based programs: Nucleus kernel linux. It didnt work

Recover My Files. It didnt work.

Stelar Phoenix Linux. It worked. Well, it found the files, but i cant get them back, because it's a demo.

Now, this seems to be the biggest mystery. WHY hasnt i found any similiar programs in Linux... an open source or something? Or is there just a simple command to get the partition back? Because as i have understood it, the command i wrote isnt a real formatting, that can only be done in fabric.... does anyone know any free working program in either windows or linux for this? The hd was an ext3 filesystem hd.

Thanks.

"What to do with the disk?"

Restore from backup.
