Unaccountably mencoder no longer works?

Day before yesterday discovered that:

mencoder tv:// -ovc play -oac play -o filname

worked to record. (subsequently improved it)

Imagine my confusion when today the set of commands that worked yesterday appear to give no new error messages but

Code:

mplayer filename

gives only a blank screen and silence.

I have done nothing, what is wrong?

You have misspelled "filename" in your first command, is that relevant?

Don't think so, thanks anyway.

It wasn't my most sensible post. Have got it working again with

Code:

-noconfig all

so presumably something must have happened to the configuration files. I installed dvr a video recorder perhaps that fiddled with the configuration files for mplayer etc.. The bloody thing, dvr, does not seem to work on Lenny, so why include it in the distribution? Get that impression.

Unhappilly mencoder will now not use the video codec it would use before to get the size of the file down to a sensible size.
