Unable to log in + 2.6.6 kernel problems

Hi,
I was about to set up a router box using debian and a 2.6.6 kernel. So I installed Debian and compiled my 2.6.6 kernel. When I reboot I get this error that my root partition can't be recognized due to the following:
Code:
VFS: Cannot open root device "344" or unknown-block(3,68)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,68)
So I manually reboot the machine and boot up my old 2.2.20 kernel. Booting goes fine and I reach the log on prompt. So I type my user name and press enter but all I get is:
Code:
System bootup in progress - please wait

Login incorrect
And then another logon prompt. So I wait like I'm told to and try again but get the same message. So I wait some more and still get the message and am still getting it. What's weird though is that I can log on as root typing root as user name and then my root password. Does anyone know what's going on and/or can help me?

Misc information: Root partition is on hdb4 which is the partition the 2.6.6 kernel tires to boot.

Thanks.

edit: Damn I'm so stupid. I think I know why I can't log on... but I don't know how to fix it. But trying to fix it I realized I can no longer connect to my current router through DHCP and thus can not connect to the network. Any idea of why this is? Oh, yeah and what I did wrong was that when trying to get rid of that annoying X logon prompt I deleted S99rmnologin mistaking it for S99xdm in /etc/rcx.d/. This rmnologin really was no joke, eh? o_O (thought it was refering to the X logon prompt)

Anyways, any help will be greatly appreciated.

hi,
are you using grub/lilo?
in either case, make sure the root partition mentioned is what / is really on. and if you use lilo, i hope you ran 'lilo' as root, after updating /etc/lilo.conf

Thanks for the reply, but yeah. I'm using lilo and edited the /etc/lilo.conf file accordingly after compling. A note on that though: The booting of the kernel itself on the lilo boot screen goes fine. And from what I can gather from the few boot messages before the boot stops due to the above error it's trying to boot / of hdb4, which is indeed the root partition.

I found out exactly what S99rmnologin does and wrote a script that does I THINK exactly the same thing. At least I can log in normally now. Anyways. I'm still getting this kernel panic when I try to boot to my 2.6.6 kernel. Kinda looks like I don't have the right file system type compiled into my kernel doesn't it? I have ext2 though. And ext3 for that matter. Planning to tune2fs after compile. It couldn't be because my root hd is my primary slave not master can it? Would be odd though since I can boot 2.2.20 just fine. What do you think? Any ideas?

I am a chinese, maybe you understand what's i say
first change the directory the kernel source, for example:
#cd linux-2.6.6
#make menuconfig
select "Dvice Drivers->ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support->"
you hat to select this "ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support"
#make
#make modules
#make modules_instal
#make install
configure the boot manager
#reboot
Good lucky!
If not succes! please mail to youxia_2008@yahoo.com.cn

tsingming, thanks for the reply and interest in my problem.
But unfortunatly that's not it. I already compiled support for my IDE drive. Double checked it just a minute ago to be sure. And after searching and experimenting by myself I am still no closer to the solution. I do have one far fetched possible solution in mind but I doubt it will work. I'll try it in a few minutes and post the results.
Further input greatly appreciated of course.
