Unable to access files with group XX even though i'm a member of XX

Okay, so this is kinda weird, i stumbled upon it while trying to get virt-manager working on linux mint/nadia.

It said i wasn't in the group, so i made sure that my user came after the group in /etc/group.

Still nothing. All of the dependencies are installed, this is a permissions issue.

I tried adding myself to the mlocate group, and made sure g+w was set on the mlocate.db file, and when i ran updatedb, it says cannot create the file.

Just weird... running $ groups myname shows that i belong to those groups, but i'm unable to do actually do anything
