I'm using vmware in Ubuntu 5.04 (The Hoary Hedgehog) and after going through a lot of trouble to get it working, I can't get it to find my network/ethernet adapter. When I boot my XP Pro vm it says "Could not open /dev/vmnet0: No such file or directory Virtual device Ethernet0 will start disconnected". I can't seem to find anything on this. I have Vmware workstation set on bridged network. Please help!
You can not use DirectX with VMware. Older games like Starcraft works in VMware. You have to either disable it or do not install it. If you are using VMware 5, you can only use OpenGL. A game like War Craft 3 can be played with VMware, but make sure you specify opengl in the command line path. Diablo II does work in WINE if you specify Windows 2000 as the fake Windows version.
Are you sure? The d2vidtest works fine, and it finds the VMware svga as a valid d2 device. The problem might actually be when it tries to play the short videos that say "Blizzard" and "Blizzard North" at the beginning of the game. And starcraft uses DirectX, so it wouldn't make any sense if that worked and Diablo II didn't.
//edit: Nope nope nope. I put in my Warcraft II disc and played the previews. They use the same video technology and they worked.
//edit2: I just tried Diablo II with Wine emulting w2k. Fatal error initializing directdraw. When I run the Directx 7 setup on the d2 disk, it says directX is already installed. Whoop, if I set it to have a Wine Desktop in winecfg.exe then it works. But d2loader still won't work. Argh!
Starcraft uses directdraw which is the same as direct rendering or framebuffer mode. Diablo II can use either directdraw or direct3d. You should pick directdraw if you are going to use in VMware.
Do not install DirectX in WINE because it will not work.
You should install wine tools to get WINE working properly.
The error "Fatal error initializing directdraw" means that you did not select the right option of the four in Diablo's video test utility. Sorry, I do not remember which one.
Warcraft II does not use DirectX. It is designed to run in DOS. Warcraft III uses either DirectX or OpenGL.
