Ubuntu Preferred Applications, insert DVD vs. click on movie file?

Hi,
When I insert a new DVD, mplayer pops up. When I double click on an AVI or MPG file, mplayer also pops up. Under system -> prefs -> preferred apps -> multimedia, the default multimedia player is gmplayer %F.

For hard drive files, I do want to play the file. But, for inserting a new DVD, I want to run K3B, not mplayer.

The obvious place to put this option is under system -> prefs -> removeable drives and media. But, Ubuntu 9,10 does not consider a dvd drive to be a "removable drive". The only options are cameras, pda, printers, scanners, mice, keyboards and tablets. How is a DVD not a removable drive?

How do I set the program to handle a CD/DVD insertion event without changing the default behaviour when double-clicking on a hard drive file?

On winders, you right click on the cd drive -> properties -> autoplay -> select action to preform from a list (play, copy, open, nothing, ...).

Is it much harder than that on Ubuntu?

Thank you,
BrianP

my xubuntu has dvd options under removable devices - multimedia.

Hal is responsible for mounting dvd-s so check if you can set dvd application there.

Is a DVD a FILE or REMOVABLE MEDIA? Problem solved!

PROBLEM SOLVED!

A DVD is a removable medium. It should be found under system -> prefs -> removable drives and media. On my Ubu 9.10, it is not.

Methodically scouring all possible Ubu menu items and subitems, I found it under system -> control center -> file management. A DVD is not a file any more than a hard drive or a network is a file, though they can all contain files.

Under the media tab, there is a media handling section: "Choose what happens when inserting media or connecting devices to the system". DVD video is one of them. Choose open k3b.

Now, when I insert a DVD, k3b opens up, not mplayer. When I click on an AVI file, mplayer still plays.

Yooy says he has "dvd options under removable devices - multimedia". That's where it most properly should be. If they want to add it to additional places, so much the better.

File management is not the best or most obvious place to put it.
