I am looking for the best programs to do typesetting and page layout functions.
I will need to use the program to create custom booklets and brochures for special events - up to the full-fledge typesetting of a book. I also do musical typesetting.
I am currently aware of TeX and its variants. But, is there something that is better or more industry standard?

What's wrong with TeX in terms of "standard"? It's widely
used in Universities, and produces high quality PostScript
output which any print shop should most happily accept.
And I'd highly recommend Lilypond - works a treat if you're
familiar with TeX :}
I have tried both. I have continuing problems with Rosegarden, so I really don't like to use it (but I think the idea of it is good). I do like Lilypond for regular Western notation - but I do a lot of Ancient Notation. I have found a couple of promising programs for my use of Gregorian Chant, but still have not found a reliable program to take care of Ancient Byzantine Notation.

TeX is very good. I was just wondering what else (possible more standard) that is out there. My sister deals with a lot of printers, and they seem to use mostly programs like QuarkExpress and such.
