Turn off Mointor with Server (SUSE 9.3)

Perhaps some Linux experts can help with this one...

Is is possible, using the built-in power management in SUSE, to turn the monitor on and off at predetermined times? Ideally, this would be done via using server time (ie screens turn on at 1:00pm and turn off at 2:00am).

As an alternative, is possible to configure Suse to do the same thing without the server?

Thanks for any info, I know this kind of a strange question.

Thanks!

You can do this with the xscreensaver. Configure the screensaver to use power management and to blank and power-down the monitor (dpms) after 1 minute. Then cron the following commands for the times you want:

# Power off the monitor
/usr/X11R6/bin/xscreensaver &>/dev/null &
/usr/X11R6/bin/xscreensaver-command --activate &>/dev/null

# Power on the monitor
/usr/X11R6/bin/xscreensaver-command --deactivate &>/dev/null
/usr/bin/killall xscreensaver &>/dev/null
