OK - so I didn't read the instructions properly from the very beginning!!! thought I NEEDED the AMD64 system - Dohhh!

I'm going to do a re-install with i386 version. If 64bit linux is as problematic for drivers as 64bit XP, then I want to make life easier for myself. Thanks for your help. I'll come back on when I've tried again.

BTW Ethernet chip is Vitesse 8201
