Trying to break up a movie into its component frames?

Hello,

My problem is this - I'm trying to use mencoder/mplayer to take a movie (say an AVI) and break it up into separate still images of its frames (say JPEGs or something). I know how to take a bunch of images and turn them into a movie, but I haven't yet figured out how to take the movie and turn it into a bunch of images.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

you can use

mplayer -vo jpeg yourmovie.avi

make and cd to a dedicated directory, it generates a lot of files.

Have fun,

What worked for me too was playing a video in the command line (without X on)
