Totem will not play DVD's

When ever I try to play a DVD, Totem reports that there is no plugin to play the movie. Does this mean the CD-Drive drivers are incorrect, or do I need to download some extra plugins before I can play DVD's?

you don't have any xine dvd plugins installed. Totem is a different frontend for xine (meaning it uses xine to play it's movies). Xine is a pretty standard video player in linux. another example of a xine frontend is kaffiene, which is KDE-specific (i'm guessing, hence the "k" instead of "c"). I'd start at the xine homepage (http://www.xinehq.de) and learn as much as possible.

here's a good page w/ DVD plugin info: http://davis.lbl.gov/Manuals/XINE/howto-5.html

Be careful tho, linux and encrypted DVD's is sort of murky territory when it comes to legal issues. Read up before you do anything... good luck

You probably don't have libdvdcss installed. Use urpmi to get it.

Hi,

I am a newbie in Linux world. I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop. I am not able to play a DVD on Ubuntu 9.10.

>You probably don't have libdvdcss installed. Use urpmi to get it.

After some browsing I thought I should try using VLC. And its working perfectly now. Many thanks for the prompt replies.
