This is all too common - what's the fix?

Whaaa...??

THe following packages have to be removed...blah blah:
libqt3-3.3.2-20mdk.i586 (in order to install libqt3-3..2.3-19.1.100mdk.i586)

Well, that's great, but about a zillion KDE apps use the file and I cannot update/replace it.
This is preventing me from installing/upgrading many packages. The most inportant one being:
checkinstall-1.6.0-0.beta3.2mdk

WHat gives? How can I do this without wrecking KDE -- SHould I update every kde application?

I have done this before and lost KDE -- I'm not in any hurry to do this.

Help, please.

You're in Dependency Hell. You could always try adding --force, or even stronger, --nodeps as an option when you try to install that package, but do so at your own risk. I am not guaranteeing that it won't trash your KDE installation.

You're trying to replace a bit of software that is fundamental to every KDE application. Naturally it's going to be difficult.

Instead of doing a "rpm -i pakage.rpm" do a "rpm -U pakage.rpm". The -U will upgrade the file instead of overwriting it and you won't have that problem.

Thanks for your response.

So -- in essence, what you're saying is that I am stuck with the versions that I have installed.

See -- that's pretty limiting. I guess I could uninstall all that is KDE, put Gnome on -- and then install all the latest KDE schtuff -- NAAH.

THat's not an option.

THis sucks -- I really like linux. However the more I try to do -- the more I realize how limited this OS is -- or my abilities - or a combo

Now -- hold on a second -- I know what I just said -- and Yeah -- I know it was said by a noob without much experience, but it seems to me if an OS expects to have users it might make it easy to update software. Don't tell me urpmi (dksldksl) -- urpmi is just another interface, that's all.

Yeah -- I saw a zillion posts already about this -- and universal installers and all that -- but this -- being my 6th mdk 10 install has so far been my best - in terms of the order I install things.

It sucks starting from scratch -- I do have a life. SOme of us don't want to be sysadmins -- I had my days with that already with NT.

So -- it feels like I have reached limits here with this install and I don't like it.

I don't mind having problems -- hell it's fun to work them out -- but like I said -- I DO have a life. I run a store-- and raise kids ( I don't get any sleep as it is ).

Looks like I back up my mail and firefox folders and start again? Or -- there is another solution.

Is it the mandrake distro? Do other distros enablr updating software?

THanks for reading and any advice

Um, at first glance it looks like you're issuing the rpm command from the wrong directory. The rpm file is in your currently selected directory, right?

Ey?

thanks

machiner

I need a smoke--

I will download the file and attempt the commands -- will post

ok -- went to rpm pbonne --rpmfind --

downloaded libqt3-3.3.2-20mdk.i586

now, if I install this file, will it wreck any of my installed stuff? Those apps expect to see a different version -- ahh, I can trust everything to update? Ey??

[root@localhost machiner]# rpm -U libqt3-3.2.3-19.1.100mdk.i586.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
qt3-common = 3.2.3-19.1.100mdk is needed by libqt3-3.2.3-19.1.100mdk
libqt3 = 3.3.2-20mdk is needed by (installed) libqt3-devel-3.3.2-20mdk
libqt3 = 3.3.2 is needed by (installed) qt3-common-3.3.2-20mdk
[root@localhost machiner]#

no worries -- we're getting somewhere.

TO answer your question about the -U (
vasudevadas) I would say it works -- so long as dependencies are accounted for

[root@localhost machiner]# rpm -U libqt3-3.2.3-19.1.100mdk.i586.rpm
