If the devices are set to listen to standard ports and some standard user then you could possibly make a script to rotate through a list of mac addresses or ip addresses and try both ssh and telnet.
Companies sometimes install products like solarwinds to monitor systems.
Some networking tools are made to look for open ports and that may provide means to create table to then test for remote server reply.
When you are in the wild like this it may be time to force standards. Both ssh and telnet and the forgotten but usually open tftp may be a huge security issue.
and how it looks "to you" may not be the same as what it looks from the outside. so be prepared to
utilize a couple of tools, or short scripts to cull it all together.
