tar with no output?

hi all i've been trying to find out how to not show tar's output and i searched and searched but can't find how to do it without adding > /dev/null to the end of the command but i'm thinking that there must be a better way right?

Don't pass "-v" ?

What's wrong with > /dev/null?

A search of the man page reveals no "quiet" or "supress" output options.
