Question ...tar.gz files

When installing a new application, where is the standard place to but the ...tar.gz file?

Is it /tmp?

Also, what is tradition once the application is installed, delete the ...tar.gz file or keep it on the system. Note: /tmp is periodically manually cleared out, this is why I am asking.

Thanks,

Robert Liguori

Anywhere you'd like, it's a temp location, not necessarily anywhere specific. I put mine in:
/home/packages
OR
/usr/local/packages
Depending on my system

As for removing them, if you've got a lot of space, you can keep em, however it's not necessary either. I do, I've got the room, and I like to be able to easily find out what version I installed, plus if I need to re-install or whatever, no need to re-download.

I tend to put them in /home/zips or something similar; as Cool said they can be handy to have around, but aren't crucial
