SuSE 9.0 and the 2.6.1 kernel

Hi all,
I'm trying to install the 2.6.1 linux kernel on my SuSE 9.0 system. I've taken the following installation steps in the /usr/src/linux-2.6.1 directory:

# make xconfig
# make
# make modules
# make modules_install
# mv arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage-2.6.0-test4
# mv System.map /boot/System.map-2.6.0-test4
# cd /boot
# ln -s System.map-2.6.0-test4 System.map

I proceeded with modifying /boot/grub/menu.lst so that I'm able to boot up with either the new 2.6.1 kernel or the old 2.4.21-99 kernel.

When I boot up in the 2.6.1 there's a problem loading the modules. When I issue the command:

# generate-modprobe /etc/modprobe.conf I get:

modprobe: QM_MODULES: Function not implemented

Warning: not translating path[boot]=/lib/modules/boot
Warning: not translating path[toplevel]=/lib/modules/2.6.1
Warning: not translating path[toplevel]=/lib/modules/2.6
Warning: not translating path[kernel]=/lib/modules/kernel

[...]
Warning: not translating pcimapfile=/lib/modules/2.6.1/modules.pcimap
Warning: not translating isapnpmapfile=/lib/modules/2.6.1/modules.isapnpmap
[...]

I would really appreciate some help with this matter! By the way, my version of the module-init-tools is: module-init-tools 0.9.14-pre2 so that shouldn't cause the problem...

Hi

Hi,

Don't think that's the problem. I just installed module-init-tools-3.0-pre7 instead of my previous one and upon installation the old /sbin/modprobe turns to /sbin/modprobe.old and is replaced by a new /sbin/modprobe.'

I'm looking through the boot messages I get at the moment and a couple of interesting outputs are:

[...]
Symbols match kernel version 2.6.1
No module symbols loaded - kernel modules not enabled
[...]
request_module: failed /sbin/modprobe -- char-major-4-64. error = 256
[...]
Starting sound driver: es1938WARNING: Error inserting snd (/lib/modules/2.6.1/kernel/sound/core/snd.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
[...]

Running lsmod I can see quite a number of modules, but still there seems to be many modules not loading as they should. Any ideas?

Hey!
SUSE is 2.6 ready. Meaning no need to install module-init-tools. Reinstall the modutils package before any havoc happens.

Well, at another forum some other guy said that he'd heard that the module-init-tools that I installed might be needed and since I didn't get it work with the module-init-tools that came with my SuSE 9.0 package I gave it a try...
