SuSE 8.1 Professional Yast Update Problems

I am having problems updating with Yast. I have downloaded several .rpm files and cannot seem to get them to update. Yast will actually recognize in some cases that the later version is available to update. I hit okay, and it often seems like it's updating. But when I go back into Yast and look, it's the same old version.

The way I try to update is by simply clicking on the .rpm file, then saying install with Yast (some button shows up). Then I try to get Yast to update it. Any way to fix this?

" Any way to fix this?"

I suggest that you switch to command line rpm to get these packages installed. rpm is far more flexible than YaST. You can use the many command options to diagnose the problem and fix it. See:
man rpm

I've been doing the command line stuff for a while now. However, my yast2 used to work really well for me. In fact it always worked. But now, it almost never works for new rpms (unless they're off the SuSE 8.1 Professional CD). Anything else?

"I've been doing the command line stuff for a while now."

I think that you are saying everything works fine with rpm. You can also use kdevelop to work with rpms. When I used SuSE 8.1 I used rpm from the command line. I set the file associations to open *.rpm with kdevelop. I downloaded rpms with gftp. I did it this way because it was more convenient and flexible than using YaST, not because of any bugs I found in YaST.

To get YaST working again the only thing that I can think of is to remove YaST and reinstall it.
Use rpm to list all of the YaST rpm names and then remove them with rpm -e. Then reinstall YaST from the SuSE install disks using kpackage. This is a lot of work and it may or may not fix your YaST problem.

For future readers...I am about 80% sur the reason that I cannot open RPMs directly with Yast these days is because of the package kdebase3-SuSE. I removed this when I upgraded(?) to KDE 3.2.2 (because you have to in order to install kdebase3).

By the way, jailbait...if you read this...what do you think of Fedora vs. SuSE...pros and cons?

"what do you think of Fedora vs. SuSE...pros and cons?"

I think that YaST is superior to up2date and the other Red Hat configuration programs. However, I only use the configuration programs at install time. Otherwise I do everything by hand like a Slackware user.

Red Hat has combined the Gnome and KDE desktops into a standardized desktop which they call Bluecurve. I prefer to set up completely different Gnome and KDE desktops so I detest Bluecurve and prefer SuSE's approach which is to leave Gnome and KDE in their native states.

Fedora is Red Hat's free, unsupported, bleeding edge release. I prefer bleeding edge releases enough that I choose Fedora over SuSE (I used SuSE for three years). SuSE handles the free versus paid support problem differently than Red Hat. SuSE has a time delay between the release of paid SuSE and the free version. SuSE also used to only release part of YaST in the free version. Recently SuSE made YaST open source so I expect that future releases of free SuSE will have a complete YaST.

SuSE is cheaper than Red Hat after the recent Red Hat price hikes which doesn't concern me but does affect the advice I give to the "which distro for me" questions. I recommend SuSE to people who want to pay for support and I recommend Fedora to people who want a free distribution.
