Greetings everyone.
I implemented this technique today and i would like to share it with all of you.
When Suse 10.0 is installed it has certain parameters that are always on.
This tends to slow down the system and are things that a newbie user like me doesnt even need and therefore turning them off will make your UI more responsive.
(a good thing for me since im on a P4 1.7Ghz with 256MB ram)
the following items were disabled from YAST system services.
Network Manager: Dont need it since im on a LAN and the router is never turned off.
bluetooth:My oldie doesnt even have a bluetooth hardware support
cron: read online and dont really know what it does.(i would like to know what it is if you guys can let me know)
cups: printer stuff. I dont have one.
iptables: My router does them for me. (i think it is something to do with the firewall.- not quite sure)
irda: Infrared. i dont have it
irqbalance: Would like to know what it is
nfs: Something to do with file sharing but i use smb4k-0.6.4 to connect to my brothers computer that runs XP. His is a bigger hard-drive
vnc: Virtual Network Console. if you are not going to connect to your PC from outside you dont need it.
I hope this will help someone out there,
I am new to linux but really enjoy the experience.
Let me know if i am correct with all the above and i would surely appreciate if you can help me tweak SUSE a little more.
I have read that a lot more performace can be sucked out of linux by editing the
sysctl : system parameter, but i think im a little too young for that job.
Best Regards.
