Suggestions for network backup

After an employee wiped out her files and backups before leaving our employ the management has now decided that I need to build some network storage for approx. 25 machines. This is a multi-platform operation and I would like to use linux as my server. I would appreciate any software recommendations. FreeNAS perhaps ?

When this question comes up, I frequently see recommendations for Amanda Network Backup.
