Angry Subtitles won't work

Alright heres my problem in short the subtitles won't display when I watch a dvd.
I'm running mandrake 10.1
I have dxr3 installed, xine, and totem
I have the latest versions of these from the cooker rpms. The movie players play the dvds fine, but I have no subtitles what so ever. So if anyone has figured out what causes this to happen I'd greatly appreciate some feedback.

don't even have a dvd-player (haven't still found any reason why it would make my life better, heh), but have you checked out (in Totem, for example) the menu that has "subtitle" inside it? which subtitle is selected (if there are multiple choises), or are there any? if not, then google for it, my friend...

Yeah I made sure that the subtitle was selected in the menu in totem and I"ve googled for this problem like crazy and really came up with nothing other than making sure dxr3 is installed and it is so I really don't know whats causing it but the subtitles just don't work.
