startx --> (EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/mice No such device.

Hi,

I've installed a 2.4 Debian sarge inside VMWare, and it worked perfectly, until I've installed VMWare Tools. I did it like this:

In Windows-VMWare-Install VMWare Tools
Switch to textmode (ctrl-alt-f1)
do the installing
Switch back to X (ctrl-alt-f7)

And it worked. I could start vmware-toolbox. Now after a reboot, X wont start anymore.

This ist the log:

Code:
XFree86 Version 4.3.0.1 (Debian 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1 20050901212727 fjp@localhost.localdomain)

X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.8-16.0508-2 i686 [ELF]
Build Date: 02 September 2005

I allready tried making a new config file with the XF86config tool, and also tried to manually edit the file. If I change the /dev/input/mice line under input to /dev/input/mouse0 or /dev/psaux nothing happens, and the log isn't affected (red lines remains the same)

Btw as I installed Debian, the max. resolution/refresh rates were 800x600 at 60hz, and the XF86config tool didnt affect that matter. I had to manually put in "1600x1200" into the config file, and then it worked perfectly.

What could I do to make X run again?

edit:

Ok fuck it...

Solution: Start the kernel module for USB mouses:
modprobe usbmouse
--> Problem solved

So you have an usb mouse? I am having the same problem here but i have a ps2 mouse. It worked during my install of gentoo64 but all of a sudden it stopped working. Do you have any idea what might have happened? Thanks for any help.

in refrence to your using xf86config

I had run into a similar problem, I found that xf86config generated a file called xf86config but X uses xf86config-4 now

so just rename the file and you should be good to go

btw, it located in /etc/X11
