Software installation

I have Linux Suse 10.1 and I am trying to install mplayer. I extract the tar.gz. and then run config and it says I do not have an acceptable complier. I cannot install the software, because I cannot create the make file. I also did not install the last 2 disks and the bonus disk. I am not sure if the gcc is on that. If you could lead me in the right direction that would be great. Thank you for your help.

Why don't you try to install it from a rpm? Look it on rpm.pbone.net for your specific distro. Also, if I remember well, you should have on Suse an update manager called yast or smth like this... Hope this helps.
