Slackware XFree86 probs.


When i attempt to run the GUI (by typing in startx) my screen goes blank and i get this error.

(EE)VGA(0): No Display subsection in Screen section "Screen 1" for depth/fbbdd 1/1
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have usable configuration

Fatal screen error
no screens found.

Help PLease

Sounds like you need to run xf86config as root, so you can setup your monitor, video card, mouse and keyboard.

Yea i did all that several times, still doesnt work!

it will let you fun xf86config as user, do you need to run it as root? this is the location /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config

just curious

You need to configure X first with xf86cfg or xf86config, it usually creates XF86Config.new file in the current directory. You might edit this file by hand afterwards and in either case you need to copy it over /etc/X11/XF86Config
have all necessary documentation regarding your monitor specs, video card handy, you might need to hack things like HorizSync and VertRefresh rates, etc.
