skype - cant use it

i am running conectiva 10 on my laptop. My goal is to have skype working here. I downloaded the static qt binary version and run it as root (it doesnt run as a regular user) but when i try to establish communication i get this message:

[root@eyelet skype_staticQT-]# ./skype
read error, res = -1 , handle = 29

And i have no sound in nor out. I can hear the phone ring but not the other party. Does anyone know how to probe for a built-in microphone in a laptop? And what that error message means? I am checking posts at

Which is supported by skype itself.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

i have not used skype, but from what i read over @ skype has been taking a serous bashing about having a history of spyware <eg> Kazaa so i wont install it right away and am waiting for the more expert Linux gurus to dissect skype and determine what all is in it and since the source code is not available that could take a while...
