Should i enable zlib?

I am compiling my kernel (i am a newbie to this) and i noticed an option called zlib under library routines in menuconfig. What is this and do i need to enable it. I am using kernel 2.4.21 from kernel.org. I am running slackware9 on an AMD athalon with a ati radeon 7000 ve pci. I do not know if thats even relevant but i am thinking that zlib has something to do with graphics compression.
Thanks

I know its a simple question, but i am a simple person! =)
