Is there any program for Linux in which I can send files via the modem between my Xubuntu 8.04 machine and my Microsoft Windows 98SE machine? I ask because connecting my Windows 98 machine wouldn't be very safe and I need to transfer large files that won't fit on any form of compatible media.
I ask because connecting my Windows 98 machine wouldn't be very safe...
Why wouldn't it be save to connect (via a LAN?) to your Windows machine? Linux is not affected by Windows viruses unless they are written in Java or some other cross platform language. I only ask about that because you seem to imply that connecting via a LAN is possible.

unfortunately, I don't have any spare network cards that are Windows 98SE compatible, and also, I'm not entirely sure if that modem will work, so I would like to find that out as well without paying for a dial-up service.
also, Its the windows 98 machine I'm worried about
PPP is Point to Point Protocol and is how you would network over a modem... It's exactly what happens when you dial from a PC to an ISP to get on the Internet. The how-to may have been done in an old version of Redhat, but the process should still be similar enough to work, or you could search for one for Ubuntu....
Ok, I've tried some more stuff, and I can't figure out what the phone number to give the other computer would be... To dial in, my other PC requires a phone number which I have no idea where to find.
