Services crash when uploading file to ftp site

We are running a remote server setup with RedHat Linux Enterprise 3. We have an FTP download site running successfully using vsftp.

I'm am trying to set up an upload site going to a different directory with write-only permissions. I can connect and transfer files successfully, but when I do http, smtp, and vsftp services crash for about 5 minutes. At first I thought the server was rebooting, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Any suggestions?

I have been fighting this issue for two days now with no solution! My latest tests show that we can access FTP site using PuTTY, WTP, and Internet Explorer v6 just fine. When I try to logon using Internet Explorer v7 I can usually logon and start a transfer, but in just a short time I lose http, smtp, and vsftp services for approx five minutes.(we are logging in remotely which means we lose all connections)
