sensors-detect not working for lmsensors

i've compiled gkrellm, gotten it to run, and i want to be able to view temp and fans of pc, intel board so it should be compatible

i needed to download lmsensors and i2c-something and i did so as mentioned in another thread; compiled those and then ran sensors-detect whereupon i found that i should get rivatv

downloaded rivatv (newest version), did ./configure and took care of all the error messages from that, did the make and make install as root; all was well

i do modprobe rivatv and i get errors!
i try doing sensors-detect again and this time i when it tries to load rivatv, it gives me i2c errors! how do i solve this?
i have installed i2c and i am running sensors-detect as root; is there something i didn't do?

What kernel are you using? (uname -r)
And what happens when you do modprobe i2c?
