Search utility better than Catfish?

Hello. I've yet to find a suitable replacement for the excellent Win app Agent Ransack. There's an appealing list here so I was wondering if any of you have a favorite out of them or another not listed there? Tia.

Never heard of it, but indexing software is pretty ubiquitous - may depend on which DE you are using.
gnome has tracker, KDE has baloo for example. Look around, you may already have it without knowing.

I used to say windows is not linux and linux is not windows. Do not expect the same behavior look and feel, tools, apps...!
Anyway you posted the link to alternatives, so you can choose your preferred one. Test them (if you wish).
There are a lot of different ways to search and it mainly depends on what are you looking for (text, image, configuration, whatever...).
I use mainly grep.

SearchMonkey seems to be an explicit clone of Agent Ransack - have you tried it and found issues?

The trouble with asking "what's like X in Windows" is that some of us here have never used Windows! The best bet is for you to try the programs listed at the site you've linked to and see which you like. I suspect that most of us just use the tool provided in our desktop (like catfish); the true geeks will use locate in the CLI …
locate

I try not to but old habits die hard, as the saying goes... Sometimes Wine provides a workaround but not in this case.

Thanks for the advice.

Not yet but will do so asap. Like I said in the OP I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced the same 'dilemma'...

Thanks for the tip.

locate
Would you agree with this?

The mlocate package is OK for finding a file if you know the name, but text searches across a linux volume are slow, finicky and almost never give me what I want.
But if you've never used Windows then there's no comparison parameter.

What I really like is having the option to search by size, date, type, etc.

Thanks for your time.

This is the correct, or at least most likely answer.

The alternative.to list doesn't include those at all - that site can be very useful, but also misleading and confusing because a 1:1 software replacement is rarely possible or even the best solution.
In other words, OP should probably explain what features they're missing in catfish.

You could try Recoll as well, I like it and it has excellent search results.

If you want to find and manage duplicates, please take a look at this article: https://www.tecmint.com/find-and-del...iles-in-linux/

fslint for duplicates and other shenanigans
'grep's, of various kind (like pdfgrep) to search for text.
filelight for a nice visual representation of disk space hogs.
regular find to just find things.

o_O I don't think I've ever consciously used anything else. Whenever I accidentally run a KDE app that has baloo or whatever that thing is called (like kmail ) I immediately kill all those processes.
(I'm on xmonad, a tiling window manager, I use a lot of KDE apps, but not all ofthem do that stuff)

Like I said above, I like having the option to search by size, date, type, etc. and I haven't found those options in Catfish. Thanks for the reply.

That and all the above gives me a good start. Thanks.
