screwed up mbr


DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Just installed Red hat on my windows box , zipped through the install and now when I reboot, lilo hangs,(it juat says li) I can boot to linux with a boot floppy or I can boot to a dos disk but when I type "win" it says dos ver 8.00 required to run this,(I have WIN ME) I did not make a WIN ME recovery disk . Any thoughts?

You might be able to get back into windows by running the command /sbin/lilo -u as root to restore the mbr. If that doesn't work, you'll need a bootable msdos disk that has fdisk on it and then run fdisk /mbr.

As for the problem with lilo, post a copy of your /etc/lilo.conf file.

A couple of links.......

........about WinME and dos.

This one seems to suggest you can use a Win98 boot disk to get into dos on WinME and this one gives a patch to restore dos to WinME.

FWIW, HTH, NIMBY. I've not tried this so you're on your own.

Cheers guys,

Fdisk/mbr did the trick , but it was my last resort , seen freaky things with fdisk/mbr, though luckily this time it fixed my problem.
