All Unix systems I've touched shut the screen off after xx minutes of idle time.
I've just installed OpenSuse 10.2 but the way I use the PC it's a major pain to keep tappimg the space bar to get sight of what I'm monitoring most waking hours.
Anyone any thoughts on how I can turn this off. I'm happy with cli and BASH, just a bit rusty on the finer points, if you consider me a Newbie that would be about right.
Which Window system (if any) are you using? Both GNOME and KDE have "preference" settings where you can specify screen savers and actions. There is also a "timeout" setting in the X server itself. See this for details.

It's not an Xwindow thing it's a Unix thing.
I'm using KDE but I've sorted out (with the help of this Forum those issues)
In that link it discusses how to adjust DPMS in using xset. You can also set it in your xorg.conf (or xf86 equivilent). You mention it's a unix thing, which I assume means it's happening in a console and not in X, which means DPMS in xorg is probably not going to fix your problem. Console blanking is controlled via the setterm command.

Looks spot on 'link'.
I'll try that tomorrow morning at it's 10pm here and at this time of night I'll likely do more damage than good !
Many thanks for all the help !
I'll report back the results!
Whats the name of that arcane 'Script Editor' that Unix users can't avoid ?
