Screen Lock up when enabling full screen in VLC

I was curious if anyone else has had this problem with VLC when playing video files. The problem specifically is the screen will completely lock up and I can't minimize or close VLC to correct it when I select full screen display. My only option is to use the keyboard shortcut ctrl. alt, backspace to kill xserver and avoid hitting the reset button on the tower.

I am currently using Ubuntu 5,04 Linux version 2.6.10-5-k7 on a AMD 1600 with 512 mb of ram with an ATI 9000 Pro card with the latest ATI linux driver.

Was hoping someone out there would have an answer on what I should try to avoid having the whole xserver lock up when enabling full screen in VLC.
