I have a Debian Woody 3.0 R2 with kernel 2.6.8 running a file server with samba, The problem is that in one sector of my lan, I canīt copy .doc and .xls files to the file server but if I zipped I can do it, also when I move the terminals, to another part of the lan, for example my office I can doit. The terminals are running win98. I format one of this terminals (thinking that was a virus o something like that) but when I plug it in this sector it do the same again.
I donīt know what is happenning if it a soft or a network problem!!!
it's kind of hard to say..... could be anything from user rights or network issue (cable transmit problem). try run'n some IP testing program like ethereal or tcpdump or related
What to you mean by sector? Is that portion of the LAN passing through a router that is filtering your files? Also, look in your smb.conf for a
veto files
parameter.
my smb.conf it's ok, the problem is only with MS Office Files in Win98 Clients and sometimes With WinXP Clients. With sectors I am meanen difernts switchs.
I realy don't know what can be...
This is my smb.conf file

When you zipped the Office Files, that also made them smaller. So at this point we don't know if that success is because they are not doc/xls or because they are just smaller.
Lets rename the files to .bak or .xxx so that they stay the same size and try the test again. That way you know if its a size issue or name filter. Also, you might copying a very large file and establish a benchmark from your various sectors. This is beginning to sound more like a hardware or cable problem.
It could also be a problem with the duplex settings on the switch and the workstations in that sector. If one is set to half and the other full, small files would be okay but larger ones would regularly fail.
I only have problem with Ms Office Files, when I try to modified a Ms Office file in the File Server or copy a Ms Office File the DenyMode is DENY_ALL.
