samba over internet

I'm trying to access my samba shares on a server that is behind a linksys router using cable internet. I forwarded the port 139 for netbios-ssn and it didnt work. I set a DMZ on the router from the server IP so I could have every port forwarded and i tried connecting to the WAN IP Address and it still didn't work. It keeps saying that the path is not found. HTTP works, SSH works, etc, but I can't get samba working.

What am I doing wrong here? Anyone have any suggestions?

You may not be doing anything wrong it might be your cable company. Most cable providers block
the ms file shareing ports because of stupid users shareing out there harddrive to the world. Cox
my cable company is one such that does.

yeah i know verizon dsl blocks port 80 because of viruses that spread over http...usually you just change the port number from 80 to like 257 and it works.

Who is your cable provider? I am on comcast...do they block netbios-ssn?

Try Shields Up

If you visit www.grc.com and get to "Shields Up" (Click on it on the index page, scroll down the next page) you can get your ports probed. This will show you whether Port 139 is open or not (and expect a minor scolding if it is open).

Even if netbios is not blocked by Comcast I would not recommend using it because it isn't secure. I suggest a VPN.
