Samba configuration

Hi. I am trying to setup samba so I can move a big ISO off my windows HDD to my Linux one. Whenever I try to log into samba, I get reprompeted for a password. I followed several documents on how to set-up my config file, but I am having no luck. Here is my config
Code:
# Samba config file created using SWAT
# from 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1)
# Date: 2008/12/28 12:16:42

[global]
	workgroup = MSHOME
	server string = %h server
	obey pam restrictions = Yes
	passdb backend = tdbsam
	guest account = smbguest
	passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
	passwd chat = *Enter\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *password\supdated\ssuccessfully* .
	syslog = 0
	log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
	max log size = 1000
	dns proxy = No
	panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d
	invalid users = root

[homes]
	comment = Home Directories
	valid users = %S
	read only = No
	create mask = 0775
	directory mask = 0775

[printers]
	comment = All Printers
	path = /var/spool/samba
	create mask = 0700
	printable = Yes
	browseable = No

[print$]
	comment = Printer Drivers
	path = /var/lib/samba/printers
I am using SWAT to set it up. Is there something obvious I am missing?

I run Debian Etch. I don't know if I started the lisa deamon or not. I just typed /etc/init.d/samba start to start the server. If that didn't start eveything, then I don't know.

try this
Quote:
/usr/bin/lisa
I'm not really sure about the path
To start it automatically add above line to /etc/rc.local

Did you add a user? Samba needs it's own users and doesn't use linux users. Don't know about swat, but from CLI, use smbpasswd to add auser.

Easier alternative, if all you are doing is this ISO copy, would be to add

security = share

in the global section. You could then delete

Code:
	obey pam restrictions = Yes
	passdb backend = tdbsam
	passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
	passwd chat = *Enter\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *password\supdated\ssuccessfully* .
Does the user smbguest exist (this would need to be a unix user, since this ties in with who owns guest files, etc.)

Note that if you go for share security, you would need to define a generic share drive, since [homes] looks for the home directory associated with that user

Note that for your current setup to work, you would need a unix user "user1", with a home directory /home/user1, AND a samba user "user1").

All right. I am now able to conncet to the server. I still need to define a share drive. However, I decided to try to print to this from my Mom's new Lenovo, and got a connect error. It tells me access denided even though I have security as share.

Could be lots of things, but I'd try a firewall issue. I don't know the Debian firewall interface off hand, but you need to allow access through ports 137-139 and optionally 445.

If it isn't that, take look at the samba logs for useful error messages.
