I have recently activated Samba on my Cobalt RaQ4 - Cobalt Linux release 6.0 (Shinkansen-Decaf) Kernel 2.2.16C37_III on an i586.

Everything seems to work fine. I can navigate via Computers close to me, I can map the share to a drive, but I can't write to it (drop a file on it). When I map the share, I specify the user name. I use a different login to access Samba than my Win login. Any ideas why I can't write?

My smb.conf looks like:

your umask is 755, so the owner can RWX, but group/everyone else can only RX.

Since your win and Local user are different, the account you're accessing the share with falls under 'everyone else' who doesnt have write access...

Add your win username/pass to your local system, and give it a smb password, put it in the group who owns that share and change permissions to 775.

That way if you have any other users yo ucan add them to the group too, much cleaner than chown'ing the share to your username.

A couple of things. I think you misread my smb.conf - I see the create mask as 775 as you suggest. Is that the same as the umask you refer to?

I set the owner and group to nobody, since I saw a suggestion indicating that was the best method for sharing r/w volumes. One person even said it was required to work.

Are you suggesting I create matching users and groups on both XP and Linux/Samba?

Note that I am using this on a LAN and not exposed to the web. Thx
