S.O.S. HELP can't get past, run level 2

Hello, I was having some screwy things going on with my Dreamlinux 2.2 MMGL desktop, so I did a system restore, when I rebooted, I don't get past the inits. I get

"cannot execute/etc/initd/rcS then it says enterling level 2 cannot execute /etc/limi.d/rc

then when I try a startX I get unable to connect to xserver fatal server error

I also noticed it says volume sd1 is dirty run chkdsk in windows, is there a way to fix this, If not is there a way to just reinstall ontop of the install, so I don't lose data? Also in installer the partition shows as reiserfs, but no mountpoint is checked off or filesys, strange since there was one before.

Thanks

I'm no expert but I'd try and use a live cd and see if I could mount the partition.

Looks like that's what I'm going to have to do, but being a noob, I'm not sure how or if I can do that, any pointers?

I'm no authority either but I have read a couple of articles in these forums. Unless someone else can step in and help I will suggest using the search at the top of this page and enter key words such as ( mount - partition - hd ) for starters. But the more I read about your problems it sounds like you may have to do a new install.
